Some vendors have recently added 2 Factor Authentication (2FA) to their gate access control systems. Allegedly, this is to make the system more secure. In reality, it’s likely been done to stop multiple users from using the same account. Many systems charge a license fee per user, so there is an incentive for people to share accounts. The vendors have turned on 2FA to stop people from sharing accounts which will increase sales. In reality, it has become a big pain for users.
It is much better to have each user use their own credentials. The leads to better reporting and accountability. Many older gate systems were developed when everyone in a household used the same home phone. So having a callbox that called the house made sense. Only one account was needed per household. This is not how things work anymore! Now everyone has their own cellphone. Under Tap2Open, each user gets their own account and contact info. The person who sent the invitation is the one who gets notifications for the guest. The guest is given instructions to contact the resident who sent the invite, not the general number for the house. Most kids won’t even answer the home phone!
To stop account sharing, Tap2Open charges a fee per household, not per user, and all the homes in the community must subscribe. Each user gets their own account. This way each user can manage their own guests, and receive notifications from their guests, not every guest to the household. 2FA is a big pain when it continually asks you to verify your identity. Tap2Open intentionally didn’t implement 2FA.
